The beginning of the Story of unimotorcycle in Switzerland (and in Europe)
it is an article published in EasyRiders No 242 of August 1993 which spoke
about the birth of unimotorcycle in the USA. The idea of this race germinated
in the tortured mind of a guy called Sidecar Willy.
It is really him who opened the way towards such races with crazy one
wheel machines. The main idea is very simple: ride as quick as possible
100 feet with a motorbike stripped of fork and frontwheel and the engine
must not touch the ground . The main rules of this sport stipulate that
the engine must be at least 5 years old and entirely of origin. The machine
should not exceed 1.20 meters broad and 2.40 length. Small wheels are
not allowed.
Only a few months have been necessary to organize the first race in Switzerland
(October 1994). In 1995 a series of races in French-speaking part of Switzerland
and a demonstration race in France with 2 machines.
And in order that the adventure "Unimotorcycle" does not finish
in 1995, variouis bike club in Switzerland are contacted by the TEAM El
Iminator. As a result the setting-up in 1996 of one mini championship
in Switzerland and the first "legendary" race organized by MC
Dead Riders in Sumiswald.
From 1997 to 1998 the unimotorcycle race make is way in Switzerland butwithout
really convincing. In 1999 the unimotorcycle is choked in Switzerland.
In 2000 it is the arrival of 3 machines from Germany for the first European
race in Sumiswald.
In 2002 the race of Sumiswald becomes worldwide with the arrival of the inventor of the unimotorcycle, Mr. Sidecar Willy
Currently there is in Switzerland only one race every two years in Sumiswald.
It is a true pleasure to see the development of the unimotorcycle in Europe.
Since the first race in Switzerland, the coarsely arranged machines makes
place to sophisticated machines. When I remember the evenings passed to
study the regulations of the NATIONAL AMERICAN UNIMOTORCYCLISTS SOCIETY
in order to find the best way to manufacture a competitive and if possible
fast machine, I am proud to see that our ideas crossed the borders and
that the unimoto is? practice in whole of Europe.
